We believe students should be literate, employable, assessed (formatively), vocal, enquiring and social. So in Every1Speaks we aim to develop these skills through collaborative learning.
Literacy
Concise, persuasive and considered is what we consider a ‘good idea’ to be at Every1Speaks and so constantly drive user behaviour towards achieving this. Individual ideas, comments and questions cannot exceed 100 characters and ideas need to be summarised in a single word. All of this supports concise persuasive writing to develop through the analysis of the writing styles of other contributors. Over time they have both read and written volumes without realising it. We track all of this and are able to tell you stats from number of words written through to their active vocabulary and how this develops over time. Higher level critical thinking skills are developed through reflecting on your own perspective each time you comment. We require them to indicate what their comment highlights: a strength, weakness, a potential improvement or personal opinion. Simple but profoundly powerful.
Employability
Communication, team work, research and collaboration. Intrapreneur or entreprenuer these are the employability skills of the 21st century. In Every1Speaks the best ideas develop by being considered from multiple perspectives by multiple users. This is practice for succeeding in a collaborative workplace.
Assessment
We think assessment should be formative wherever possible rather than summative. When we modify our teaching practice to reflect student learning, during the learning, to enhance the learning, we get better engaged students who are less focused on grades and more focused on the learning process. They become aware of meta-cognition. They become reflective learners better able to move towards situations in which they learn well and also increasingly more aware of situations in which they do not. Every1Speaks is perfectly placed to become the focal point of this formative assessment process, it is iterative, evidence is captured and it is easy to share/discuss other people’s opinions without making it obvious who voiced them.
Voice
Student, parent and teacher voice are all developed through Every1Speaks. Designed to value the quality of ideas not the credibility of the author, Every1Speaks gives users equality through anonymity. This is a great forum for a ‘voice’ debate where you want reasoned and progressed ideas with maximum flexibility to add your own idea at any time. It is not a translation of a boring questionnaire nor simply a pretty forum. In oral debate in class there is the tendency for those most able to express their opinions verbally that emerge as the ‘winners’. By disassociating the person from the idea, we level the playing field so that the best ideas come to the top, not the most vocal person.
Enquiry
Every1Speaks is built on principles of enquiry based learning. Groups, through IdeaMaps, are posed open ended question and must submit and collaboratively built up ideas that answer or solve this question (or pose new questions!). Issues are truly open-ended; from games design to English coursework, this group based enquiry approach is proven to be effective. Central to this effectiveness is boosting creativity through making discussions fun whilst also encouraging student led learning.
Social
The social aspects of learning are incredibly important and community is a big part of this. Every1Speaks supports all groups within a school to be represented via controlling access to individual IdeaMaps. Conversation can be created and tailored to the group’s needs and you decide if you want people from the outside to see, join or be unaware of it. Each of these can be tracked and developed. Furthermore, this can extend beyond the walls of the school to include parents, local community or even schools across the World, reflecting the age of the global citizen.
